Mitchell & Ness The Orioles were a charter member of the American League in 1901. After struggling through two years of financial difficulties the Orioles moved north to New York and became the Highlanders, and eventually the Yankees. The nickname, Highlanders, came from Hill Top Park, the highest point in Manhattan. In 1954, Baltimore welcomed back the American League after the St. Louis Browns relocated their franchise. On September 19, 1955, eighteen-year-old Brooks Robinson made his debut with the Orioles. Robinson played his entire career with the Orioles, winning 16 consecutive gold gloves at Memorial Stadium’s third base. In 1964, while Beatle-mania was sweeping across America, Robinson won his first and only American League MVP Award. That year Robinson led the league in RBIs (118) while batting .317 and hitting 28 home runs, collecting his fourth consecutive Gold Glove Award along the way. The Orioles celebrated the Sesquicentennial Year of the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ with a patch on the left sleeve of their jersey.
