  Mitchell & Ness 1983-1984 NBA Eastern All Star Game throwback jersey #06 Julius Erving In 1976, prior to its extinction, the American Basketball Association introduced the slam dunk competition. This fan favorite event was established to coincide with the ABA All Star Game in Denver’s McNichols Arena. In 1984, several years after the ABA became defunct; the NBA revived their created artistic competition when the All Star Game arrived in Denver. The event would help basketball transform itself into a game which was played primarily above the rim. The one player who was instrumental in revolutionizing the slam dunk was Julius Erving. Dr. J led the Eastern Conference to a 154-145 overtime victory by scoring a game high 34 points.
